Thats cocobolo , the back plate has been pore filled one coat the top plate has not.

For the record, I think it should have PI binding :) Cocobolo darkens a lot with oxidation, so it should be plenty visible. I may be able to help with the supply... I have 5 strips for use on my Black Rose guitar, which will either be one broken and 4 used, or hopefully all intact with one being a back strip, in which case I should have a 15" cutoff, plus some shorts that will be usable on your headstock's corners. Might be from the same Chris V. batch as yours... I'll fire up the hot pipe and see if I can get those body bindings bent without any snaps.

I have some Pink Ivory you can have. The board is 7 1/4 by 30 inches long. I'll be cutting some 00 back sets out of it, and I can part with the rest. It's also very curly! The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
